Selous game reserve represents the largest uninhabited area in the continent, and this alone makes it worth visiting. It covers a total area of 50,000 square kilometres and was declared a UNESCO heritage world heritage site in 1982 due to its wildlife diversity and undisturbed nature. The large untouched expanses of land showcase nature at its beautiful best. Selous game reserve is one of the two destinations used by elephants for their annual migration, and if watching millions of wildebeest isnt possible, you can go for the next big thing, watching thousands of elephants at Selous.
Most of the reserve is set a side for game hunting through a number of privately leased concessions, but a section of the northern parka long the Rufiji River has been designated a photographic zone and is a popular tourist destination. The rather difficult road access means most visitors arrive by small aircraft from Dar es salaam.
The parks habitats include grassland, acacia savanna, wetlands and the extensive miombo woodland.
