Gombe National Park is located in the western Kigoma region of Tanzania, 10 miles north of Kigoma city. Established in 1968, park is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania, with only 13.5 square miles (35 kilometres square) of protected land along the hills of the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The parks terrain is characterized by steep valleys, forests, savannah grassland and woodland.
Accessible only by boat, the park is famous all over the world because of its connection to Jane Goodall and her pioneering behavioural research on chimpanzees. Chimpanzees tracking expeditions are an obvious highlight, but one can expect to see several species of primates here. Gombe presents a trail system which lets visitors penetrate deep into the forst and enjoy some of the best views of the African bush.
