Garden Route National Park

Overview

The astonishingly beautiful Garden Route National Park is one of South Africa’s glittering gems. Located in the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces, the Garden Route National Park is a coastal reserve well known for its indigenous forests, dramatic and sprawling coastlines, breathtaking scenery, land and marine wildlife viewing, quaint towns, magnificent mountainous landscape, and Otter hiking trails. The park is a natural paradise where the beauty of land and sea converge. The Garden Route National Park is different from many popular South African National Parks that are known for wildlife safaris and game viewing. Besides the spectacular scenes and environs, the Garden Route National Park offers a number of exciting activities including eco-tours, self-guided treks and hikes, Whale watching, bungee jumping and rock climbing.

The park is divided into three sections: the Wilderness section, the Knysna Lakes section, and the Tsitsikamma section. All three sections have many hiking and walking trails available. Most of them can be found in the Tsitsikamma section, ranging from short trails that need multi-day hiking to be covered. Forest excursions are also available in all sections. Travellers who enjoy watersports can try canoeing, kayaking, river tubing, snorkeling or scuba diving.

Best time to visit

All year-round but February to April is preferred if you want to avoid the crowds. The park is located in a yearly rainfall region and temperatures can vary dramatically from one region to another due to the size of the park.
