Nxai Pan National Park

Overview

Nxai Pan National Park is located on the northern fringes of the Makgadikgadi basin and includes Nxai Pan, an ancient lake bed that was once part of the vast Lake Makgadikgadi.  This incredible park offers stark contrasts between its dry and wet seasons making it an all year round safari destination. The park is home to elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lion, leopard, cheetah, kudu, springbok, impala, ostrich, Cape wild dog, jackal, hyena, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and honey badger.

The Park is famous for the cluster of millennia-old Baines baobab trees which are a sight sought by many travellers venturing into this untamed terrain of Botswana. In addition to the Baobabs, the landscape of Nxai pan is dotted with clusters of umbrella Acacia trees and mopane woodland in the north and during the rains, it gets covered with grass. Whilst many other parks and reserves are not considered to be at their best during the rains, Nxai pan becomes a veritable Garden of Eden. Once the rains start, game viewing can be good and the birdlife is excellent

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the national park is during the cold winter months of May to September when wildlife gathers around waterholes. However, from mid-November to March – Nxai pans becomes a veritable Garden of Edens.
